Non-Flying Sail Adjustments and the Time on Time Method

To be eligible for a "NO FLYING SAILS" rating, boats must use working sails only; attached by their luff to permanent stays or spars. Not less than 90% of the luff length must be attached to the permanent stay or spar with not less than 8 (eight) snaps or sailtrack slides distributed evenly along the luff; or, alternately, attachment may be by a luff-rope groove. Only one (1) working sail luff may be attached to each permanent stay or spar.

Only one sail may be used forward of the main mast on Sloops, Cutters, Yawls, and Ketches unless the yacht is specifically rated for carrying additional sails. When changing jibs, the "up"--hoisted--jib must be fully lowered to the deck before the replacement jib is raised. Before lowering the "up" jib, the replacement jib MAY be hanked on the forestay, or started in the second headfoil groove up to five feet above deck. The second halyard may be attached before lowering the "up" jib. Jibs may NOT be attached to temporary or detachable stays. NFS ratings exclude such sails as spinnakers, mizzen staysails, streakers, drifters flown from their own temporary stays, etc. Rating adjustment is based on largest jib. Size of sail measured by SAFJ.

Boats Rated With Standard Size Spinnakers

The first digit/character in the Rating Code in the Roster indicates Jib size. Find this value for the specific boat, and use the respective line below to find the number of seconds to add to the Rating given in the Roster, resulting a slower rating in seconds/mile. Then, replace the Roster rating code SECOND Character with A,B or C, as appropriate to indicate this is a NFS rating for the boat.

  • Jibs coded (rating code first char) 1,2,3 = Add 21 seconds to Rating, use "C" for 2nd Char in Rtg Code.
  • Jibs coded (rating code first char) 4,5,6 = Add 18 seconds to Rating, use "B" for 2nd Char in Rtg Code
  • Jibs coded (rating code first char) 7,8,9 = Add 15 seconds to Rating, use "A" for 2nd Char in Rtg Code.

Example: A boat with a Rating = 210, and Rating Code of 456M, the 4 = 18sec; 210+18= 228 / NFS Code 4B6M.

Boats Rated With Non-Standard Size Spinnakers

The following Table provides conversions from a Boat's (Flying Sail) PHRF-NW Rating given in the Roster Listing to an equivalent Non-Flying Sails Rating for boats with NON-STANDARD SPINNAKERS, based on the boat's current Rating Code parameters, as indicated in the Roster Listing.

To convert, look at the second character of the rating code, (5555) and find that value in the left column of the Table. Then, if the first character (5555)of the Code is a "1, 2, or 3", add the correction in the Second Column to the boat's normal SF rating. If the first character is "4,5, or 6", add the correction in the Third Column to the boat's FS rating. If the first character is "7" or higher, use the Third Column. Then use the NFS Code in the respective table column to REPLACE the second character in the Rating Code, to denote that this rating is an NFS rating code for that boat. EXAMPLE: If a Boat's normal "FS" rating, from the Roster, is 156, with a Rating Code of 6735, then that boat's NFS rating would be 156 + 24 = 180, with a Rating Code of 6B35.

Note: Some roller furling jibs are mounted on a roller-stay just aft of the permanent forestay. This is approved for NFS, if NO sail is flown from the permanent forestay.

NFS rating allowances for standard spinnakers modified from 1997 Roster for 1998.

Alternate Time On Time Scoring Method

PHRF-NW TIME ALLOWANCE TABLE FOR TIME ON TIME RACING

An Alternate Scoring Method is used as an option by area Yacht Clubs for various race series (Corinthian YC Center Sound Series, for example). Where stated in the Race Instructions for these respective races/series, the following table is used to convert PHRF-NW standard Time-on-Distance (T/D) ratings as given in the Roster Listing to Time-on-Time (T/T) ratings.

USE FOLLOWING CORRECTIONS FOR PHRF- NW RACES DESIGNATED TIME ON TIME SCORING METHOD. TIME ON TIME RATINGS (T/T) LISTED BELOW ARE STATED IN SECONDS PER HOUR. TIME ON DISTANCE RATINGS (T/D) ARE STATED IN SECONDS PER MILE. LOOKUP IN THE FOLLOWING TABLE TO FIND YOUR T/T RATING OPPOSITE YOUR T/D RATING LISTED IN THE ROSTER. LOOKUP THE RATING OF YOUR OPPONENT. THEN MULTIPLY EACH ELAPSED TIME,IN HOURS, BY THE APPROPRIATE T/T RATING. THE RESULTS ARE THE CORRECTED ELAPSED TIMES IN SECONDS. USE THE FOLLOWING IF MORE ACCURACY IS NEEDED.
